Dr Raj Kumar Vishwakarma, IPS has been appointed as the new part-time DGP of UP Police – just two months ahead of his retirement, which is scheduled to take place in May 2023 unless he gets an extension. Rajkumar Vishwakarma is currently posted as the Director General and Chairman of the Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.
According to sources Vishwakarma will officiate as Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board and as well as acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh till a permanent appointment is made. He will, however, not be entitled to any additional salary or allowances for his new role.
Vishwakarma 1988 batch IPS officer has taken over DG of UP following the retirement of DS Chauhan who himself was made acting DGP of UP after Mukul Goel was transferred out of the post.

Chauhan retired on March 31 after holding the additional charge of DGP for 11 months.
Vishwakarma who hails from Jaunpur is the second senior-most IPS officer after Mukul Goel, a 1987 batch IPS officer.
Mukul Goyal, the senior most police officer in UP is due to retire in May 2023.
Four other officers of the 1988 batch were in the race for the post of the DGP. Among these, Vijay Kumar is due for retirement in January 2024, Anand Kumar retires in April 2024, Anil Kumar Agarwal who is currently on central deputation will retire in April while Vishwakarma retires in May 2023.
Vishwakarma was IG (Law and order) during the riots in Muzaffarnagar district in UP in 2013.
Meanwhile, the UP government is understood to have affected the transfers of the top five IPS officers in the state. SN Sabat has been made the DG Prisons while DG Jail Anand Kumar has shifted as DG Cooperative Cell, Vijay Kumar the DG CBCID will also hold the additional charge of vigilance, while Manmohan Kumar Bashal has been made the Special Director General of Police of UP Power Corporation.
Likewise, Special Director General (law and order) Prashant Kumar has given additional charge of crime and Economic Offence Wing (EOW).
