The best time to visit Shree Jagannath Puri and the Gundicha Temple depends entirely on whether you prefer a comfortable sightseeing holiday or a grand cultural festival.
- Winter (October to February) –is the ideal time for general tourists, senior citizens, and families. It is the perfect time for exploring the Kalinga architecture of the Gundicha Temple, close to the main Jagannath Temple and the Puri Beach. This season is also perfect if you plan a side-trip to watch migratory birds at nearby Chilika Lake.
- Weather: Delightful and breezy, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C.
Monsoon (June to July) – If you want to experience the vibrant living legacy of Queen Gundicha and King Indradyumna, you must visit during the festival months. The grand Rath Yatra takes place in this season. This is the only time the beautifully carved wooden idols are present inside the Gundicha Temple. For the rest of the year, the temple remains open for architectural visits, but the sanctum is empty. The Rath Yatra began on July 16. The return journey (Bahuda Yatra) occurs on July 24.
- Weather: Hot, humid, and rainy.
Summer (March to June) –If you can handle the heat, hotels drop their prices significantly, making it a quiet, affordable time to visit the empty shrines and peaceful beaches. Avoid the mid-June “Anavasara” period if your goal is the main temple, as the deities are kept hidden away to “recover from a fever” before the chariot festival
- Weather: Scorching heat and high humidity, with temperatures frequently crossing 35°C to 45°C.
