Flamboyant former Sri Lankan cricket captain turned politician Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for the fastest fifty (against Pakistan 17 balls) and fastest 150 (against England in 95 balls) in ODI cricket. One more record is going to get added to that– fastest exit from politics.

Jayasuriya has decided to to quit politics, will not contest in August 17 elections. Speaking to the media, Jayasuriya who won the parliamentary election from Matara obtaining 704,352 votes in 2010 announced his resignation as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party organizer.

Jayasurya’s decision to quit politics seems to be linked to Mahinda Rajapaksa’s comeback in politics as the UPFA’s nominee in the August 17 elections.

Jayasuriya who earlier served as deputy minister of Postal services in the Mahinda Rajapaksa government and was recently appointed deputy minister in President Maithripala Sirisena’s national unity government. Sirisena was elected by the people for six years on January 8 this year after beating Rajapaksa.

Just last month on the 10th of June Jayasuriya and three others- Thilanga Sumathipala, Eric Weerawardsne and Wijaya Dahanayake were sworn in as Ministers in the President Sirisena government. Sanath Jaisurya was appointed Deputy Minister of Local Governments and Rural Development.

Jayasuriya has reportedly conveyed his decision to quit to SLFP party Chairman Maithripala Sirisena and General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

Sanath Jayasuriya is reportedly facing a storm in his personal life as well. His estranged second wife, Sandra Jayasuriya a former Sri Lankan Airlines flight attendant has filed for divorce and is demanding maintenance from Jayasuriya for herself and her three children – a son called Ranuka and two daughters – Keshani and Yalindi.
