One of the reasons people hate politics is that truth is rarely a politician’s objective. Election and power are… Cal Thomas
Nowadays politicians have become the flavour of the season, especially with frequent elections happening throughout the year in different parts of the country, one gets to see a variety of election gimmicks live through various mediums like television, the internet and now smartphones too. So what is it that makes these people so popular, loved as well as most hated too?
To understand this we need to first understand that basically there are two kinds of politicians, the ones who are genuinely patriotic, self-sacrificing or saintly who have an inner drive to plunge into politics because they are fired with a vision to work for the poor, downtrodden, the exploited and neglected brethren. Such kind of a politician would feel highly energised to see great potential in his/her country and people & may have dreams to take his country to a place of honour among the comity of nations. On the other hand, there may be politicians who may stealthily enter the portals of politics for power, positions, prestige and privileges or for amassing wealth without any moral scruples.
These types of politicians are over-ambitious who make all possible attempts to capture levels of power for self-advancement or for narrow interests of a class, community, party of the coterie. It is because of this latter kind of politicians that politics has become dirty and politicians, as a class have been defamed at large.
Off lately the majority of the news publications and news channels are busy only in bringing out ‘Top Political Scandals’ for their readers-viewers with lots of spice to create sensationalism. Many reports have so far been published about the links of some politicians with the mafia and underworld wherein charge sheets have been filed in courts. Along with this, also there have been reports of booth capturing, dummy voting, abductions and even killings during the elections.
Thus, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that there has been an all-around degeneration of moral standards and the wrongdoings of some handful of people have done great damage to the whole political system. Since politicians hold prominent positions and they are followed by masses across the country, the scandals and scams in which they are involved and the strictures passed against them set a bad trend among the people, because looking at them the common man also starts thinking of making money by shortcuts.
Just as a film personality sets a trend for new fashion in dressing, a politician because of his power and position sways the mind of masses in a right or wrong manner. Hence, if a politician is a person of upright conduct, then all the publicity about him/her can do immense good to people and can help mobilise public opinion in the right direction. But, unfortunately, today we find that the leaders of the current generation have dis-appointed and truly let down their loyal followers who with a lot of zeal, hope and enthusiasm elect them every time. Just as guided nuclear missiles in the hands of misguided people can spell dooms so also powers in the hands of those politicians who do not observe certain essential principles, can wreck a nation & create havoc in the lives of its nationals.
It is therefore strongly advised that politicians should change their outlook, attitudes, lifestyle and work culture through a powerful system of values & meditation which is India’s unique contribution to the world culture, because unless the people in power change, there cannot be a change in common people. So, let us not seek to fix the blame for the past, instead let us accept our own responsibility for the future and move ahead, because the secret of getting things done is to act in the right direction!
