Japan has lowered the voting age from 20 to 18 years.

The Diet had already passed a law to lower the age of adulthood from 20 to 18 from April 2022.

The changes will likely require political parties to cater to a wider voter base, as observers say many have tended to focus on the elderly, who have a higher turnout rate than their younger compatriots.

Interestingly the decision to lower Japan’s voting age was led by politicians rather than voters. There was actually significant opposition from voters, including from younger generations such as those in their 20s. But as the reduction in the voting age has come under scrutiny in the Diet, public perception to the change has evolved and become more favourable

The revised law will be effective within one year.

With voter apathy in recent elections more prevalent among young voters than the middle-aged and elderly, Japan faces a challenge in getting more young people involved in the political process.

Around 2.4 million people aged 18 and 19 will become eligible to vote.

According to analysts, lowering the voting age is necessary to raise the young generation’s involvement in politics and help them express their political views.

Japan last lowered the voting age from 25 to 20 years in 1945.
