Road hypnosis: How to avoid it?

Road hypnosis is a trance-like state faced by drivers who keep driving the vehicle almost in an auto-pilot mode, without being aware of what is happening around them or the distance covered.

A driver experiencing road hypnosis may be able to drive and control the vehicle in a normal, safe manner – but doesn’t recollect how he reached the destination, what happened on the way or how he got there, later.

Road hypnosis is not the same as fatigued driving or falling asleep behind the wheel. Numerous studies have shown that sleep-deprived driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol.

Road hypnosis is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Even the most expert drivers may experience road hypnosis, especially on a long road trip and suddenly snap out of it without being able to entirely recall what happened during the last few km – or few hours.

When this happens, parts of the brain stop communicating with one another as quickly or as frequently as someone who is fully awake or conscious. This reduces the driver’s reaction time and the risk of collisions.

Road hypnosis makes it impossible for a driver to react to changing road conditions within a reasonable amount of time.

The type of road can also contribute to road hypnosis. Driving on a long stretch of straight road without stops or turns often cause the brain to go into a semi-conscious state.

Here are a few tips to avoid road hypnosis:

  • Sleep well before a long journey.
  • Don’t drive continuously, take breaks every two hours.
  • Have a cup of tea or coffee to stay alert.
  • Try to cover most of the distance during the day if it is a long trip.
  • Maintain a good driving posture throughout the journey.
  • Keep checking the rear-view mirrors.
  • Listen to different soundtracks.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Don’t overeat.
  • Avoid alcohol.
