Have we in India gone morally bankrupt?

An 11-year-old girl writes a letter to her school teacher about her pain of being raped by her own father, A teenage girl raped by her father for 6 months in presence of her mother, A 88-year-old grandmother raped by her 16-year-old grandson…. These are a few sensational headlines that we all read quite often, prominently on the pages of all the newspapers. One can’t really help but scream from within in agony after reading all these and wonder that ‘ Is this all really happening in India?

The answer to this would be YES! it does happen (also) in India. Normally the majority of us read about this news with a sense of shock and then turn to another page to read more exciting & thrilling news.  With an ever-increasing number of sexual crimes happening across the country, we all have now become used to it just like we became used to terrorism. So is this how we have ushered into New India? Modern India, Young India, Dynamic India? Now, what do we call it? Looking at the headlines of newspapers mentioned above, it won’t be wrong to say that we are living in a dangerously unsafe scenario where morality is at the lowest ebb.

Looking back at our rich cultural heritage, one really feels that how come our civilization has fallen so low? What is it that has made us morally bankrupt? A deep analysis of the issue reveals that all the above-mentioned acts to ravage a woman’s modesty are due to ‘human attitude of body consciousness’ i.e identification of the self with the body. It is this ignorance about the true self or forgetfulness of the self that has caused cultural havoc in society. When a person does not know who he really is, what is his relationship with others and with Almighty is, then he flounders in the quicksand of sin. He fumbles & stumbles in darkness and finally falls down in a deep-obscure ditch.

This is the mother of all blunders that have led to the downfall of man. It is this that has changed the world into hell. Today the link of love & the connection of the intellect of man & Almighty are broken, as a result of which man’s love & emotions cannot be divinised nor can his intellect and mind be enlightened & guided. So the first step in reforming man’s current mentality is to give him true knowledge of the soul in order to make him soul-conscious and viceless.

True knowledge of the soul is like an arrow that destroys the vicious tendencies of man. It is like a detergent that washes and cleans the soul of its blemishes that are there in the form of dirty habits. It restores self-respect and solace of the spirit and brings the soul back into the state of bliss, for it enables one to re-establish the love link and connection of mind with One Supreme, who is Blissful. The present state of our society clearly points to the absence of revealed and pure knowledge of soul, Supreme & world. Hence if we need to change the headlines of newspapers from morally degenerating to a more positive & empowered one, then we would have to give our current generation the true knowledge of Soul.

Many faiths have now started to recognize that we can gently raise our consciousness, connect with the Source, and serve as instruments of the ONE to bring that healing light, love and power into the world. It is a subtle exercise in which we can serve to empower and strengthen others as well as ourselves. So let us start practising soul consciousness and salvage our country from going morally bankrupt.
