Sports Authority of India (SAI) has offered to sponsor the coaching diploma of National medalist boxer Mrunal Bhosale who drives a goods carrier for a living in Pune.
Pune-based Bhosale’s plight was highlighted by a section of the media and when the issue was brought to the notice of SAI Director General Injeti Srinivas, he immediately offered to help.
“SAI would be happy to sponsor him for a one year coaching diploma at NIS Patiala or its 
Bangalore branch if he is interested. After he passes the course he can apply to become a SAI coach. We will be very happy to support him,” said DG, SAI.
Bhosale (28) won a bronze medal in the 64 kg weight category at the National Championship in Nagpur and has been hoping to get a decent job that will allow him to focus on his boxing career. Media reports said the boxer was currently working as a tempo driver to earn a living, thereby affecting his training and future prospects.
DG, SAI also explained that their offer was not out of sympathy and the offer to sponsor the coaching diploma is based on professional considerations and merit. He also said that SAI is always on the look out for good coaches and feel Mrunal can be a good prospect.
However, its upto Mrunal whether he is open to shift his focus to coaching or not. SAI is committed to provide all possible support to talented sportspersons in the country. (IANS)
