Modi v/s Manmohan government’s Pakistan policy
By Brig Arun Bajpai
The Modi government’s Pakistan policy is more or less the same as was followed by the Manmohan Singh government, with some cosmetic changes. The cause of this is because our politicians listen to Babus and do not consult the armed forces and other experts. The points in common and differences are as follows
Both Modi and Manmohan Singh Government followed the policy of engagement with Pakistan even at the cost of losses.
Both Modi and Manmohan governments tried to pamper the civilian governments in Pakistan to stop the Pak terrorists, supported by Pakistan army and ISI. That is even though it is common knowledge that the civilian government in Pakistan is toothless and a sham democracy prevails. The Pakistani army decides the policy to be followed towards India.
A difference between the Modi and Manmohan Singh government severe reaction to cross-border firing. Pakistani Army tried to test the Modi government response to cross-border firing by ordering artillery fire on Indian positions without any provocation early last year. They expected a weak-kneed Indian response like in the case of Cong-led UPA days. To give credit to Modi, he gave a free hand to the Army to respond. Pakistani army did not know what hit them. Their 80 posts were destroyed and more than 20 soldiers killed. They tried to activate the international border in Jammu sector. Here also, they got a severe pounding. A lesson went home that India will give a suitable response. Since then cross border firing with heavy weapons is a thing of the past. The point to note is that Pakistan read Pakistani army only understands this tough talk where the guns speak.
Another difference in the Modi government’s policy is to befriend the Gulf States. Saudi Arabia, the chief benefactor of Pakistan, is annoyed with its protege because Pakistan has refused to join a Saudi-led coalition in the against ISIS. By befriending the Gulf States, Modi government has been able to isolate Pakistan to some extent.
However, Modi Government has to understand that Pakistan read Pakistani army will never be a friend of India. If today they are showing some thaw and taking some remedial action against the perpetrators of Pathankot Airbase attack because both China and America has told Pakistan to do so. America wants to withdraw from Afghanistan at the earliest and China will not invest 56 billion dollars in China –Pak economic corridor if Pakistan continues sending jihadis to India. It is because these countries feel that unlike pussy footing Congress government earlier Modi government may raise the stakes for Pakistan in its troubled and restive state of Baluchistan. Here lays the opportunity for India. We must make our external intelligence agency RAW an inter-service organisation on the lines of CIA or Mossad With the capability to create life hell for Pakistan in Baluchistan. Once we have this ability to make Pakistan pay by our counter-jihad, Pakistan will fall in line because it cannot let go the Chinese booty of 56 billion dollars. India must send the message across by its deeds that it takes two to tango.
